The history of web analytics has read a bit like the quest for the Holy Grail. An aggressive push to drive short-term conversion, including the pricing scenario above, could also lead to a drop in long-term revenue and customer loyalty. If you offer a sweetheart deal that pulls in new customers, it’s possible that they’ll take advantage of that deal and disappear forever. Today’s Conversion Rate gain, if it’s driven by bargain hunters or impulse buyers, could be next month’s Conversion disaster.

When Conversion Rate Isn’t Enough
March 31st, 2010KPI’s and Monthly Objective Metrics for People Who Do SEO
March 31st, 2010In competitive markets, particularly, there will be key phrases that SEO teams will be expected to show progress towards gaining rankings for. Making search engine visibility a targeted metric provides a way for the SEO team to focus on the overall performance of the site in question. There are, however, two problems to solve with search engine visibility as a metric, the measurement of rankings and choice of keywords to be monitored.

Buying Your Competitor’s Keywords
March 31st, 2010A new argument to prevent your competition from buying sponsored search listings, containing your brand, is playing out right now in a Wisconsin court room. Habush, Habush & Rottier claims that competing law firm Cannon & Dunphy violated state privacy laws by buying search ads using the keywords “Habush” and “Rottier.” As attorneys they likely knew that they wouldn’t win a trademark infringement claim, so they’re taking this novel approach.

Google: Cyber Attacks on Dissidents Spread to Vietnam
March 31st, 2010Google’s already made big waves in the international arena this year by deciding to pull out of China after too many censorship demands and a cyber attack targeting human rights activitists’ email accounts. And now another Asian country might get the same kind of press: Vietnam. The Vietnamese cyber attacks were “not especially sophisticated,” Google said, but like the Chinese attacks, they seemed to target dissidents and opponents to the government. Rather than hacking email accounts, this attack used malware to exploit software that enables Vietnamese users to run windows in their native language.

How To Use Search To Shield Your Brand From Negativity
March 31st, 2010A critical part of managing your brand’s reputation is monitoring for negative publicity that can be easily found on the web. This concept extends beyond basic alignment of online tactics and messaging with traditional, or “offline,” reputation management strategies. Like any SEO effort, protecting a brand’s online reputation takes time; but the rewards can be more than worth the wait. Although SEO efforts won’t take care of immediate issues a marketer faces when combating a reputation crisis, a sustainable yet adaptable SEO program is a marketer’s best proactive strategy for nurturing their brand online on an ongoing basis.

Yahoo Shutters Its Yahoo Publisher Network
March 31st, 2010In a sign of continued trimming at Yahoo, the company has announced that it’s closing the Yahoo Publisher Network (YPN) — Yahoo’s counterpart to Google’s Adsense — as of April 30. YPN was launched about five years ago, but never formally advanced beyond the “beta” label. Yahoo is sending out an email today to members of the Publisher Network, and that email recommends users switch to the Chitika ad network, which has already set up a welcome page for YPN members.

Analyst Bets Apple Search Engine Might Be On The Way
March 30th, 2010An investment firm that was founded in 1895 and earned almost $470 million in net revenue last year thinks it’s likely that Apple will build its own search engine. Analyst Gene Munster stated, “We believe Apple could utilize data unavailable to Google, data generated by the company’s App Store, to create a mobile centric search engine, which would be a unique offering to Google’s search engine.”

Google Wants You To Speed Up Your Servers
March 30th, 2010Google is on the record as saying that site performance is a key factor in both organic and paid search results. The other search engines might be doing the same thing. So, if your site has always been a little sluggish during peak times, or just a bit pokey all the time, it might be hurting you in ways that you don’t realize. It’s always been true that a slow-loading site can hurt your organic search results. Sites that load more slowly aren’t crawled as often or as deeply.

Ways You’re Being Cheated On Display Ads
March 30th, 2010Ad verification is one of the hottest new areas of advertising. Starting last year, with an article in The Wall Street Journal about so called “invisible ads,” a number of companies have sprung up to audit and sometimes police display-advertising campaigns. There are many potential issues with online display advertising, but a few bad apples should not be allowed to spoil the entire market. Ad verification services have the potential to catch and correct these issues, and to give marketers the trust, transparency, and faith in display’s effectiveness necessary to bring more dollars into the industry.

Google in China
March 30th, 2010According to the AFP, their reporters in Shanghai were able to use Google’s search engine without incident, even getting search results on sensitive terms like “Falungong” and “Dalai Lama”. For those results, however, the resulting links were blocked, as has been the case. The Shanghaiist also reported two Twitterers, in Suzhou and Shanghai, who reported being able to access Google.

Boost Your SEO Efforts with Effective Traffic-Getting Strategies
March 30th, 2010In many ways, being an in-house SEO is like working on your own site. If the company website is static, then it’s a really good idea to add a blog so that you have an easy way of adding fresh content on a regular basis. Creating sites that provide links back to your main website is a great idea for many reasons. Out of this you get backlinks, traffic, and you create a wider net to draw more traffic. Starting a forum for people who’d like to discuss ideas or anything about your niche can be a superb traffic-creation plan.

Valuing Keywords Based On Their Role In Conversion
March 30th, 2010“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness…” This famous opening line from A Tale of Two Cities accurately describes the life of two keywords that reside in two very different countries (paid search campaigns). These two keywords were identical twins separated at birth. One keyword moved to Country A, which followed the law of last click attribution. The other keyword moved to Country B, where they followed the law of attribution management.

CPA Vs. ROI Optimization
March 30th, 2010The first step in ROI or ROAS (return on ad spend) optimization is to define the ROI goal. It will become abundantly clear which terms are ROI profitable versus which are ROI negative. Subsequently, as optimizers, we can try to make ROI negative terms profitable and if unsuccessful remove them. With an ROI goal set, we can manage individual keywords, keyword clusters, and the entire account to a goal ROI using basic logic.

Limit For Keywords in Meta
March 29th, 2010Tests have shown that Google indexes all of the title tags (up to hundreds of characters) but only displays about 65 characters, so best practice is to keep it at this. Meta description won’t help with rankings but will increase your CTR. Keep it to about 150 characters.

The Role of News in Blended Search – Observations & Best Practices
March 29th, 2010For many, Page 1 in search has become the new holy grail of business owners and SEO practitioners alike. Of course, nothing can guarantee you will be on Page 1 of search. That being said, as part of a broader online marketing strategy, news releases can be an effective tool to facilitate the outward expression of news and information about a business, which over time can result in the creation of online authority in the eyes of search engines.

Handy SEO Hacks for Google Analytics
March 29th, 2010It’s fair to say that most of us are running Google Analytics on at least a few of the sites we deal with. Market share for Google’s traffic tracking platform was estimated last year around 75-80% in a few separate studies. But from an SEO standpoint Google Analytics definitely leaves some things to be desired. Luckily there are plenty of clever SEOs out there who take on complicated and difficult projects that make our lives easier.

Google With More Flash
March 29th, 2010Google is about to announce some sort of new partnership involving its Chrome browser and Adobe’s Flash platform, CNET reported earlier today as a rumor. Something else interesting: Google offering more Flash-support would seem to go against its very public support of the HTML5 standard. Just about every new project Google launches these days, from Wave to Buzz, pushes HTML5 in some way. And a big part of HTML5 is the video component, which will allow users to play web videos without requiring a plug-in like Flash.

Google High-Speed Fiber Offer Proves Popular
March 28th, 2010Even with numerous high-speed providers and the promise of billions of dollars for broadband from the U.S. government, Google’s proposal to get into the high-speed Internet business has proven exceptionally popular. The reason for the massive response in Google’s broadband networks — some communities have even renamed themselves to attract the search giant’s interest, and there have been numerous YouTube pitches — is easy to understand. Google said the small number of ultra high-speed networks in the U.S. will deliver Internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today, with 1 gigabit per second, fiber-to-the-home connections.

WARNING: Fake Google AdWords Phishing Campaign
March 28th, 2010If you get an email entitled You’r adds have stopped working! from lperez_bt@adwords.com, do not open it because it is not an email from Google AdWords. The word “AdWords Site” is linked to a false Google AdWords login page. If you are tricked and login in with private Adwords login data, your company’s security will be comprised. The title “You’r adds have stopped working!” should be an indicator that this is a fake email, but it’s very easy to misread this, especially on a Smart Phone.

About Real-time Search
March 25th, 2010Clearly, Google feels they need to provide real-time search to improve the relevancy of its results for breaking news, topical stories/events, and popular queries. Real-time search isn’t popular with everyone. Many SEO experts have complained that it values quantity over quality — just be the most recent person to Tweet around an issue if you want to secure a top listing in the search results.

How To Get Backlinks Using Link Collector Sites
March 25th, 2010You can get backlinks using Link Collector sites. It’s a site that gathers in content from various sources and posts links TO them. The easiest way to visualize this is to think of them as niche-specific mini-Twitters posting snippets and links to certain topically relevant articles. Another way to think of this is having a Search Engine News Site posting SEO articles aggregated from myriad sources.

How to Become a Link Magnet
March 25th, 2010Links are the lifeblood of the web. Without fresh links, your website has no authority in the engines or consistent referral traffic. Best Practices of Conversion Rate Optimization
March 25th, 2010Conversion rate optimization is “everywhere” these days, from Twitter, to publications, to conferences and beyond. But while it’s gaining steam in the industry, it’s still a relatively new initiative for many marketers. Conversion optimization, often referred to as landing page optimization, is best defined as the on-going process of refininig and testing the post-click experience to optimize for conversion goals. It can be anything from testing a microsite against a landing page, to testing hero shots within an experience, to optimizing shopping cart forms.

Google is Crawling Foursquare for Local Citations (but not Gowalla)
March 24th, 2010Google is crawling business profiles on Foursquare and using them as citations in Google Maps. They’re not, however, crawling Gowalla business profiles. There’s a lot of buzz about the power of Foursquare to promote your business as a word-of-mouth tool. SEO Mythbusters: 3 Rotten Ideas
March 24th, 2010SEO continues to rapidly evolve, and with it so do bad SEO ideas. Focusing on keyword meta tags, keyword stuffing, and hoarding PageRank are some of the bad SEO oldies but goodies. Unfortunately, SEO is an area that remains little understood by the general populace. Those people who begin to learn a little bit about it can become really dangerous to themselves or, if they become SEO consultants, harmful to their clients. The only defense against this is education.

Adding PDF Conversion to Your WordPress Website
March 24th, 2010In WordPress, you should have unique title tags. This helps not only your SEO (Google, for example recommends the use of unique title tags), but your website readers/users as well. When every post title is unique, you can use this input to your PDF creator script to properly grab the correct post content from the MySQL database. But first, you need to have a correct title tag in your WordPress blog. Some plug-ins can do this job, but the recommended way is by using a PHP script (no plug-ins for simplicity).

Link Magnets: A New Paradigm in Link Acquisition
March 23rd, 2010“Link magnet” concept is one of the most powerful and important to understand for companies who want a true strategic advantage from their link graph profile. For a long time, SEOs have recommended the creation of “linkbait” content or “high quality content” in order to naturally attract links from the web’s link-able population. Magnetism is link acquisition is the idea that rather than simply producing and hoping people like it enough to link, you build a true incentive for them to do so.

SEO for AJAX
March 23rd, 2010AJAX and SEO is a tricky topic – after all, an AJAX-based website is more or less the same as a FLASH website: it may look fancy but is non-navigatable. AJAX should be used for what it’s designed for – dynamic interaction of the current page with the server (for instance, if you need to submit a form, upload a picture without reloading page, or updating a widget (i.e. calendar)). Most people trigger their basic AJAX through “onClick” events on a given element. In this case the spider will not floor to the AJAX generated content.

March 23rd, 2010When Yahoo and Microsoft announced their partnership to replace Yahoo organic search index with Bing’s, Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz said that while Yahoo would no longer crawl and index the web, they would own the search experience and continue to innovate there. There’s only so much innovation a search engine can do without crawling the web directly. But Yahoo is trying to prove me wrong (key word in that sentence: trying; mostly through sensational press releases, but more on that in a minute). One way Yahoo has been focusing on new searcher experiences has been through mobile.

How to Use “Linearize Page” Option of Web Developer Addon
March 22nd, 2010Plenty of people who use Web Developer FireFox Addon and yet don’t have the clue about the real value of some of its features. Basically, the tool removes all positioning and tables from the page in order to “linearize” it. Unlike all-CSS-disabling feature, this one allows to see “the source order of the content without removing all the other styles that affect how an element is displayed.”

Mobile SEO: Create, Post, and Track Content on the Go
March 22nd, 2010In a lot of ways the world of search engine optimization is about being able to be responsive to the needs of the market. Or at least responsive to the needs of the viewers for your site. This endeavor, as you can imagine, requires a certain amount of timeliness. Unless you are creating a site around all evergreen content, getting something out fast can be the difference between your next 10,000 view article and a languishing piece.
Increased PR on Twitter Profile
March 22nd, 2010Montreal Classifieds from DigitalPoint forum has figured out that his Twitter profile PR went up when more people followed him – it is logical since he’s getting more incoming links from their profies. But from an SEO point of view, all links are ‘nofollow’ and won’t give you any value, except possible traffic.
SEO For Yahoo
March 22nd, 2010Yahoo is typically a lot easier to rank in than Google and Bing. If you (mainly) concentrate on Google listings then the chances are you will see improvements made in Yahoo without doing any Yahoo-specific changes. All of the things that work well with Google will typically work well in Yahoo too (building links for example). If you concentrate on updating your website regularly with unique and engaging content, then you will naturally start ranking across the board.

Grab More Attention With Google’s New Search Ads
March 22nd, 2010At SMX West Google Senior Product Manager for Ads Quality Nick Fox offered a detailed look at several new PPC product offerings: sitelinks, product extensions and comparison ads. There are two key advantages to the new ad units. First, they push competitor ads down the page and take up more screen real estate. In some cases, this comes at a price. The second benefit is additional tracking features so you can further optimize your paid search accounts.

Internal Linking Tactics For Users & Search Engines
March 22nd, 2010The internal linking structure of a website represents a wealth of (usually) untapped opportunity. Back link acquisition is always going to be fundamental to organic search efforts, but before reaching out across the vast web for links, look within. You may have more potential juice to leverage inside your own site than you would get from several links from other sites, and manipulating your own links is (usually) much easier than securing links on other sites.

Paid Search: Cheap Way to Test Messages for Other Media
March 21st, 2010Print and PPC are two very different media—what works for one might not work for the other. PPC requires only a click to act, where print requires a lot more initiative for the consumer to take action. However, identifying which calls to action encourage users to click may help narrow down which ones are more effective at getting them to put down what they’re reading and go to the phone or computer.

Facebook Over Google
March 21st, 2010Earlier this week, Hitwise put out stats suggesting that Facebook is beating Google and Twitter when it comes to driving traffic to news sites. As it turns out, traffic from “whole” Google leaves Facebook in the dust, as a driver of traffic to news sites. When Optimizing, DON’T Test Everything
March 19th, 2010Conversion Rate Optimization is the buzzword on everybody’s lips (and tweets). People often get a testing platform ready to roll and then start obsessing over just how intricate they can get with multi-variate tests…it’s a walk before you crawl scenario. Start with the big picture: A/B tests of major page layouts, even MVTs on major design changes. Those things can yield MAJOR uplifts in conversions and they’re the things you need to focus on before you worry about what color font you use in your H1 tag and the 0.0001% lift you get from it.

The Death of the Pageview
March 17th, 2010The Web has hit a point where tracking pageviews is useless for startups. Ultimately, analytics are crucial to online success. It’s critical to measure the right things, though – the things that are actually important to your business, not things merely appeal to your ego. If you’re not measuring your visitors yet, get your toes wet – track something small. The conversion rates for the buttons on your front page would be a great place to start.

Paid Host vs Free Host
March 17th, 2010Having too many ads on your website or blog can effect your message or product you’re selling. You want readers to check out what you’re promoting, it’s already hard enough getting people to your site, why would you want them clicking away by checking out ads you’re not getting paid for. Free hosting for websites and blogs make their money by selling ad space on the work you created. So it’s better to pay for hosting and sell your own ad space on your personal sites.

And an impressive 51% of Facebook fans and 67% of Twitter followers are more likely to buy the brands they follow or are a fan of. Considering Facebook’s over 400 million users, the opportunity is great for social media marketers.

A lot of people can get turned off going to a site that has a bunch of links, tables and tables of small areas of content, it just confuses the web surfer and they will most likely leave.

People in different countries will see different SERPs even for keywords that have nothing to do with a location.

Facebook Searches Grow by 10% in February
March 11th, 2010ComScore has just released its February search engine rankings data. And while there’s nothing new in terms of who is on top, who gained and who lost, what’s surprising about it is that among all the online properties where searches are conducted other than the five major search engines, Facebook gained a significant amount of searches in February. Yes, it seems that more search activities are happening on Facebook lately. Facebook’s total search queries may not be that significant compared to the top search engines, but then it was only the online property which registered search query growth in February – amounting to 10% increase from its January search market share.

Google Is Bing’s 4th Largest Referring Source
March 11th, 2010According to Hitwise, Google is Bing’s fourth largest referring source. MSN is by far the top source, the last site visited by 42.7% of Bing users before they went to Bing. MSN — Microsoft’s portal — has long been a huge search driver for Microsoft. In fact, the company recently said that half of all Bing queries come from MSN. Bing is also the default web search engine for Facebook, so Facebook makes sense as the number two referrer, at 4.6% of traffic.

Highlighting Brand in Microsoft adCenter Campaigns
March 10th, 2010Without a doubt, one of the reasons SEM is such an attractive advertising method is its transparency in tracking return-on-investment (ROI); simply compare what you’re making in sales to what you’re paying in clicks. But what about when your focus is not sales, but increased brand awareness? While it’s a common practice to create separate campaigns by their sales versus branding intent, the two don’t have to be mutually exclusive. You can address both in a single campaign by way of fine tuning your ads to ensure that your brand is highly visible, which can result in your ads earning a solid click-through rate (CTR), and hopefully, high conversions.
